L’Eixample, the most elegant neighborhood of Barcelona is a place full of life and the most wonderful Modernista architecture worldwide! Built in the second half of the 19th century when the old city walls were demolished, L’Eixample became a stage for the works of the most famous architects like Antoni Gaudí.
The name of the neighborhood comes from the Catalan word for “extension” or “enlargement” and it was designed by the urban planner Ildefons Cerdà, who planned a new district for the growing Barcelona. After a few decades, L’Eixample was known as the living place of the wealthiest catalan society who filled the streets with their impressive Art Nouveau homes and apartments. The main artery of the modernista area became the Passeig de Gràcia avenue which is the beginning of this tour. Enjoy a walk down the most lively and elegant street in Barcelona which is also the best example of modernist architecture in the world. Discover what is called “The Apple of Discord” and visit the outstanding Casa Batlló by Gaudí. With a façade covered in mosaics of colored tiles and wrought-iron balconies that appear as rows of grinning skulls this house is a must to see! Also see the Casa Amatller by the architect Puig i Cadafalch built for a chocolate-making company’s family and the wonderful Casa Lleó i Morera by the noted architect Domènech i Montaner. Our walk continues by this open-air museum where three blocks further you will reach the second house by Gaudí. Casa Milà is easy to be noticed: its stone wavy façade has given the house’s nickname La Pedrera. Very close to La Pedrera is Diagonal, one of the city’s prestigious avenues. Have the chance to adore an almost unknown to the tourists architecture gem, Casa Comalat. By looking at the house’s façade you will realize fantasy lingers by every corner! Just a few meters away you will find another great example of modernism: Casa de les Punxes (House of the Spikes), looking like a fairy-tale castle. Continue walking with your guide for about 15 minutes or take the metro and reach Eixample’s certainly most famous building: La Sagrada Familia. Learn the history of this 130-years old project and discover the Gaudí’s symbolism while walking around the façades or visiting inside.
You can visit Casa Pedrera or Casa Lleó Morera instead of Casa Batlló if you want. You can also add a guided inside tour of La Sagrada Família. Let us know by filling in the booking form!
