Tour Details
Catalonia has plenty of historical and cultural places waiting to be discovered! Almost every town and village has preserved some part of its old quarter but some of them are purely exceptional to visit. Discover Girona, one of the most important and best preserved fortified cities, worthily compared to Florence, because of its unique charm and situation on the banks of Onyar river. Not far from Girona is proudly located Besalú, a small town with a Romanesque bridge and remarkable medieval buildings. Once an important local capital during the Middle Ages, Besalú is a hidden treasure.

First to explore is Girona, the largest city in northern Catalonia, divided by a river in two parts – the Old Town and the new one. When you get there, you will notice the colorful painted houses, lying at the banks of the river and the emblematic bridges, which are leading you to the medieval quarter. Stroll down the narrow streets and discover the highlights of the city. A combination between Romanesque and Gothic style, the architecture in Girona is surprising and impressive. You will start with a visit to the Girona Cathedral, a true masterpiece. This church boasts about its having the widest Gothic nave in the world, and amazes people with its Baroque façade and stairway with ninety steps. Learn the story of Sant Narcís, the city’s patron saint, and understand why the symbol of Girona is a bug; the fly. Continue with the Church of Sant Feliu and stroll along the top of the city walls for stunning views. You will also see the immaculately preserved Arab baths and the Jewish Quarter (El Call), one of the most emblematic and beautiful parts of the Old Town. Before you leave Girona, wander around La Rambla de la Llibertat where you can relax and have a memorable lunch.
Your next stop is Besalú, where you will literally step back in time. The star attraction without a doubt is the 11th century Fortified bridge with its two tower gates over the river Fluvià. Walking around you will admire the Jewish quarter, the monastery of Sant Pere and the church of Sant Vincenç, the old city walls and the Plaça Major. Although there is a lot to see and visit in Besalú, its greatest attractions are the medieval atmosphere and historical reflections of such a glorious county.
